Military Standard Transistors For High-Reliability Applications

These transistors are designed to ensure reliability in radiation-rich environments, making them a reliable choice for critical military and aerospace applications.

Microchip Technology has announced that its JAN transistors are now tested and qualified to meet Military-Standard Enhanced Low Dose Radiation Sensitivity (ELDRS) requirements, including MIL-STD-750, Test Method 1019, and specifications such as MIL-PRF-19500/255, /291, /355, /376, and /391.

The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) oversees the global defence supply chain, ensuring high reliability of all components used in military applications. Products must meet stringent tests and compliance standards to be included on the Quality Products List (QPL), which guarantees reliability and streamlines procurement. Microchip’s JAN transistors have passed these rigorous standards, making them a reliable choice for military and aerospace applications where radiation exposure is a concern.

JAN Transistor Designations:

  • JANSE Transistors (30 Krad): Withstand up to 30 Krad per unit of absorbed radiation dose.
  • JANSK Transistors (50 Krad): Withstand higher levels of radiation, up to 50 Krad.
  • JANSU Transistors (100 Krad):* The most radiation-resistant, enduring up to 100 Krad.

The company’s extensive experience in aerospace and defense spans 60 years, with dedicated fabs for semiconductor manufacturing and testing. Their fab in Ennis, Ireland, is a robust MIL-PRF-19500 screening and reliability testing facility. The Lawrence, Massachusetts fab is DLA certified, capable of conducting in-house ELDRS testing to MIL-STD-750, Test Method 1019. This flexibility allows customers to test components to the designated Radiation Hardness Assurance (RHA) level based on their specific program needs.

“Through rigorous in-house testing at our Ennis and Lawrence facilities, our products are certified to operate with high performance and reliability in harsh environments,” said Leon Gross, vice president of Microchip’s discrete products group. “We are committed to developing and manufacturing products that ease the design process based on our customers’ specific requirements. Microchip was the first to provide Total Ionizing Dose (TID) rated Radiation-Hardened Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJTs); now, we have worked closely with the DLA to add testing for ELDRS characterization.”

The company’s broad portfolio of high-reliability solutions includes Radiation-Tolerant (RT) and Radiation-Hardened (RH) MCUs, FPGAs, Ethernet PHYs, power devices, RF products, timing solutions, and discrete components from bare die to system modules.
