The SoCs enhance IoT with modems, AI processing, and security, enabling innovation in smart cities, Industry 4.0, connected health, and edge-to-cloud solutions.

Silicon Labs has launched the Series 3 SoCs, which feature modems and memory options that provide processing capabilities for various IoT applications, including smart cities, Industry 4.0, and connected health. The Series 3 portfolio supports all major protocols and frequency bands. Its first device introduces an IoT modem capable of operating three wireless networks concurrently with microsecond-level channel switching, ensuring continuous communication in changing environments.

The Series 3 platform uses a multicore architecture with Arm Cortex-M processors and coprocessors for radio and security tasks. This structure improves processing for machine learning tasks, with select devices featuring ML subsystems. The memory architecture ranges from Cortex-M33 processors at 133 MHz to dual Cortex-M55 cores at over 200 MHz, supporting complex applications and embedded real-time operating systems (RTOS).

Security is integrated into all Series 3 devices through Silicon Labs’ Secure Vault High, with Authenticated Execute in Place to protect communication with the cloud. The platform also includes post-quantum encryption standards from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to address future security needs.

AI and ML functions are central to the Series 3 platform. Select devices include the second-generation Matrix Vector Processor, which shifts ML operations to a specialized accelerator. This processor increases performance by up to 100x in wireless, battery-powered devices while managing power consumption.

As edge-to-cloud data exchange becomes more common, Series 3 devices help process data at the edge and send valuable insights to the cloud. For example, a smart thermostat can adjust HVAC systems based on temperature while providing data for cloud-based AI systems, balancing local control with cloud intelligence.
