Microcontroller Series For Energy-Efficient Computing

This series combines power efficiency with robust processing capabilities, designed with sustainability at its core, and is ideal for battery management, industrial automation, and consumer peripherals, boasting impressive low-power modes and extensive I/O support. 

Nuvoton Technology unveiedl its latest innovation in energy-efficient computing: the Arm Cortex-M23 M2L31 microcontroller series. This new series addresses the increasing demand for sustainable, high-performance embedded computing by delivering remarkable power efficiency alongside robust processing capabilities, with a running speed of up to 72MHz.

The microcontroller features the Arm Cortex-M23 core and comes in various configurations, offering 64 to 512 Kbytes of ReRAM (Resistive Random-Access Memory) and 40 to 168 Kbytes of SRAM. Designed with sustainability and energy efficiency in mind, the M2L31 series also includes support for two CAN FD and two USB Type-C PD 3.0 ports, emphasizing security to protect valuable data.

The key features include:

  • Voltage range: 1.71V ~ 3.6V
  • Temperature range: -40°C ~ 105°C
  • 4 to 32 MHz crystal oscillator
  • 32.768 kHz crystal oscillator for RTC
  • Normal operating current of 60 μA/MHz
  • Only draws 0.5 μA in deep shutdown mode
  • New, high-performance ReRAM (Resistive Random-Access Memory)
  • USB Type-C PD 3.0 support
  • 64 to 512 Kbytes of ReRAM on-chip

The series is ideal for applications where energy efficiency is crucial, such as battery management, industrial automation, and consumer peripheral devices. Its outstanding low-power capability significantly extends battery life, reducing the need for frequent replacements. It has three low-power modes: normal shutdown, standby shutdown, and deep shutdown, all designed to minimize energy consumption without sacrificing functionality. The microcontroller’s typical operating current is an impressive 60μA/MHz in normal mode, dropping to just 0.5μA in deep shutdown mode. It can independently manage peripheral data acquisition and processing through low-power serial interfaces, setting a new standard for power-efficient automation.

On-Chip ReRAM

The series surpasses traditional MCUs by integrating ReRAM (Resistive Random Access Memory), developed in collaboration with TSMC. This non-volatile memory format accelerates write operations by eliminating the ‘erase before write’ process required by traditional flash memory. ReRAM offers lower energy consumption and greater durability, providing significant advantages for developers in industrial and consumer sectors. The series supports a wide range of I/O and peripherals, including UART, I²C, SPI/I²S, multiple USB options, and up to 16 channels of capacitive touch. Various chip packaging options ensure compatibility with other Nuvoton products, meeting diverse application demands. The series is compatible with multiple IDEs such as Keil MDK, IAR EWARM, and NuEclipse IDE with the GNU GCC compiler. It also supports multiple program update methods like ISP and IAP, simplifying system upgrades and software updates, thus maximizing flexibility for developers and users.
