The smaller design allows for a 72% reduction in component area, enabling the creation of more compact power supplies for both consumer and industrial devices.

ROHM has launched a new series of compact DC-DC step-down converter ICs designed for both consumer and industrial use. This release includes four models, among them the BD9E203FP4-Z, a 2A buck converter with a switching frequency of 350kHz. This development comes in response to the growing functionality of consumer devices and industrial equipment, which necessitates the minimization of board space. The trend has led to increased adoption of compact DC-DC converter ICs.

One of the critical challenges addressed by these new ICs is the reduction of standby power consumption. The products are engineered to provide enhanced efficiency during periods of light load, thereby supporting applications that require reduced power consumption.

These converter ICs are capable of delivering an output current ranging from 1A to 3A and are packaged in a TSOT23 frame, measuring 2.8mm by 2.9mm. The key features are:

  • Reduces component area by up to 72% compared to traditional SOP-J8 package (4.9mm x 6.0mm).
  • Aids in miniaturization of power supply blocks due to compact design.
  • Utilizes flip chip on lead frame design in TSOT23 package to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Reduces bond wire resistance, improving overall performance.

Additional models in the series, such as the BD9E105FP4-Z, BD9E202FP4-Z, and BD9E304FP4-LBZ, incorporate Constant On-Time (COT) control mode during light load conditions to improve efficiency further.

The company plans to continue its investment in analog design technologies to drive further miniaturization and enhance energy efficiency across a broad range of applications. These applications include powering devices that operate on 3.3V, 5V, 12V, and 24V, and are suitable for various consumer appliances like refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners, as well as industrial equipment such as Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), inverters, and AC servos.

The new products will be available for purchase online starting March 2024, with pricing set at $3.0 per unit for samples. They will be distributed through major online platforms such as DigiKey, Mouser, and Farnell, with additional distributors to be added subsequently.
