Equipped with VCSEL and intelligent dual I²C Slave address, this device excels in battery-operated consumer products such as TWS earphones and VR/AR headsets.

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. announced the launch of their latest innovation in the Optoelectronics sector: the Vishay Semiconductors VCNL36828P. This proximity sensor is a game-changer for consumer applications, offering unprecedented efficiency and performance enhancements. This compact sensor is an integration marvel crafted with a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL). The key features include:

  • Package Format: Surface-Mount Design
  • Measurements (Length x Width x Height in millimeters): 2.0 x 1.0 x 0.5
  • Included Components: Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL), Photodiode, Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC),16-bit ADC and dual I²C slave address feature

This proximity sensor outperforms its predecessors in several key areas. It has a 20% reduction in package size and a 20% decrease in idle current, now only 5 μA. It excels in high sunlight environments with a 40% improved sunlight cancellation capability, reaching up to 140 klx. It delivers superior proximity detection with a detection range of 200 mm and a typical supply voltage of just 1.8 V. It significantly reduces power consumption, making it ideal for space-limited, battery-dependent devices. It is set to revolutionise user interaction in various devices, including smartphones, smartwatches, TWS earphones, VR/AR headsets, and smart glasses. It supports automatic screen wake-up and turn-off functions and detects whether users wear their devices. Its dual I²C slave address design eliminates the need for a multiplexer, reducing costs in these applications.

Designers will appreciate the sensor’s programmable interrupt function, which allows the setting of high and low thresholds to minimise constant microcontroller communication. It features intelligent cross-talk cancellation and a smart persistence scheme for accurate sensing and quicker response times. Additionally, its VCSEL peaks at 940 nm, avoiding any visible “red-tail”, and aligns with environmental standards, being RoHS-compliant, halogen-free, and Vishay Green. The Vishay Semiconductors VCNL36828P is not just a component; it’s a leap forward in proximity sensor technology, promising to enhance the efficiency and functionality of a wide array of consumer devices.
